卡尔菲休试剂分为容量法试剂和电量法试剂。容量法又有单组分和双组分的不同。电量法有阳极液和阴极液。基本配比是碘，SO2，吡啶和甲醇组成的溶液。但各种试剂组分又有所不同，各厂家试剂也各有特点。根据不同的样品和仪器（电量法仪器和容量法仪器）可选用不同的试剂。传统试剂RN是吡啶，因为毒性大气味难闻，现在先进的试剂一般是无吡啶试剂，比如无吡啶卡尔·费休试剂（碘、二氧化硫、乙酸钠和甲醇组成的溶液）。
