居住区内部街坊与街坊之间和街坊内部的道路，主要为居民参加生产、工作、学习、购买物品和参加娱乐活动服务，也为居住区公共服务设施和货运交通所用。为了保证居住区内的安静,尽可能不设公共交通路线,居住区道路可以直接与次干路相接,尽可能不与主干路(见城市道路)相接。可通行小型货车,限制大型货车和过境车辆通行，车速一般不超过20公里/时,道路做平面交叉，可有断头道和回头路，局部线型也可设计成曲线。
道路横断面布置一般是单幅式，即在车行道两侧设人行道和绿地，道路宽度可根据建筑的楼层高度、沿街公共建筑物数量以及客流和货流多少而定。道路宽度允许时，也可安排双幅式断面,即在路中间设1米左右隔离带，布置绿化。车行道宽度为7米、9米或12米。人行道和绿地每侧应为3～6米，要能满足埋设地下管线的需要。若居住区面积大，主要道路较宽且长时，亦可设置公共交通路线，以减少居民步行距离。
