性质：无色透明稍带甜味的稳定的粘稠液体。凝固点-7.2℃，熔点-4.3℃，沸点289.4℃，134℃（0.267kPa），相对密度（15℃）1.1274，折射率1.4578（15℃），着火点173.9℃，闪点330℃（闭杯），燃点412.8℃，蒸气压1Pa（20℃）。能与水、乙醇、苯、甲苯混溶，难溶于醚类，不溶于石油醚。有吸湿性。它具有与烷基相连的氧原子和羟基，因此具有醇和醚的性质。

制备方法：由环氧乙烷水合生产乙二醇，副产三甘醇约占0.5%-1%。

用途：用作天然气、油田伴生气和二氧化碳的优良脱水剂；用作硝酸纤维素、橡胶、树脂、油脂、油漆、农药等的溶剂；空气杀菌剂；聚氯乙烯、聚醋酸乙烯树脂、玻璃纤维和石棉压制板的三甘醇脂类增塑剂等；烟草防干剂、纤维润滑剂和天然气的干燥剂；还用于有机合成，如生产高沸点和良好低温性能的刹车油。
