日本文学评论家。生于静冈县。1924年从高中退学到东京工作。1926年参加创办《驴马》杂志。次年参加日本无产阶级艺术联盟，开始从事工人运动和文学运动，发表文学评论。1930年任全日本无产者艺术团体协议会机关杂志《纳普》主编。1931年加入日本共产党，并担任日本无产阶级文化联盟中央领导工作。第二年被捕，1933年出狱。战后参加创建新日本文学会，进行文学评论工作。1954年任日本大学讲师,致力于古代歌谣和《万叶集》的研究。战前的主要论著有《现代文学论》(1939)和《现代文学再论》(1944)等。战后论著主要有《近代文学的崩溃过程》(1946)、《近代短歌史展望》(1954)、《日本共产主义文学的确立》(1955)、《日本近代文艺思潮》(1956)等。
