理想化学式一般表示为 BaMn2+Mn嚍O16(OH)4、晶体属单斜晶系的氢氧化物矿物。一般均呈葡萄状、肾状、钟乳状或块状产出。铁黑至暗钢灰色,条痕呈发亮的棕黑色。半金属光泽或暗淡。摩斯硬度5~6。比重4.71。钡硬锰矿通常是在地表或近地表条件下,由含锰的碳酸盐或硅酸盐矿物风化形成的一种次生矿物。可形成大规模的残留矿床,是锰的重要矿石矿物。通常与软锰矿共同产出。
