遮放坝周围山地原始生态保存完好，弄坎江水面平缓开阔。江河上游泥沙被水流带到这里沉积，形成多个江心沙丘小岛。江河两岸低洼地沼泽地带芦苇丛生，水中浮游生物和冲积物丰富，鱼、田螺等水生动物较多，是水禽和候鸟的理想乐园。在这里栖息越冬的留鸟和候鸟有鹭科、鸭科、鹤科、雉科、鸥科、鸠鸽科、燕科、翠鸟科、棕鸟科等多种鸟类，属国家重点保护的野生动物有：颧鹅、灰鹤、绿孔雀、鹧鸪、白鹭等鸟类。还有水獭、黄喉貉等兽类和眼镜蛇、蟒蛇等爬行动物。
