| 五台山 中国四大佛教名山（山西五台山、四川峨眉山、安徽九华山、浙江普陀山）之一。位于山西省五台县东北。五台山绕周约250千米，由五座山峰环抱而成 。五峰高耸，峰顶平坦宽阔，如垒土之台，故称五台。有东西南北中五台。五峰之内为台内，五峰之外称为台外。五台各有其名，东台望河峰、西台挂月峰、南台锦绣峰、北台叶斗峰、中台翠岩峰。五台中北台最高，海拔3058米，是华北地区最高峰，素称华北屋脊。山中气候寒冷。4月解冻，9月积雪，故又名清凉山。五台山不仅风光怡人，更以佛教圣地著称。东汉永平年间，山上已有寺庙，后经北魏、北齐、隋、唐直到清末的多次修建，寺庙众多 。在全盛时期，建筑多达300余处。历史上几经兴衰，现存庙宇47座，台内39座 ，台外8座。五台山所有寺庙中以五大禅庙最有名：显通寺、塔院寺、菩萨顶、殊像寺和罗睺寺。在五寺中又以显通寺历史最久、规模最大。塔院寺中高达60米的舍利塔为五台山标志。菩萨顶内主要庙宇都用彩色琉璃瓦覆顶，其建筑之华丽居各寺之首。另外，还有金阁寺、龙泉寺、南山寺、碧山寺、圆照寺、广宗寺、镇海寺、广仁寺、万佛阁等等各具特色的寺庙。上具有重要地位，并在世界佛教发展史上有深远影响。
