西藏种绵羊的羊毛,属异质毛类型,是中国的主要粗羊毛品种之一。原产于中国青藏高原,故称藏羊毛。主要分布在西藏、青海、甘肃南部、四川西北部。云南、贵州等省的部分地区也有少量分布。藏羊毛分为牧业区饲养的草地型和农业区饲养的山谷型。草地型藏羊毛毛丛纤维主要由细绒毛、两型毛和少量的细刚毛组成,多属毛辫结构,毛辫长(18~20厘米),弹性大,光泽好,是织造长毛绒和地毯的良好原料。草地型藏羊毛多年来以青海省西宁市为集散地,又称西宁毛,在国际地毯毛市场上具有很高声誉。山谷型藏羊毛长度短,但生长密度大,油汗较多,毛丛以细绒毛为主体,两型毛占有一定比例,并含有少量粗、细刚毛和干毛、死毛,适于作提花毛毯和地毯的原料。散布在甘肃省甘南自治州玛曲县及其毗邻地区的藏系绵羊,是一个特殊生态类型。羊毛的毛色较杂,毛丛纤维以细绒毛和两型毛为主体,含有少量粗刚毛,但死毛含量高,品质较差,纺织加工受到局限,可用作一般地毯原料。
