中国稀土金属资源十分丰富，储量居世界首位。矿床主要分布在内蒙古、江西、广东、湖南等地。内蒙古自治区白云鄂博矿区稀土金属储量占全国储量的98％，它是以铁为主，含稀土金属、铌等多种矿物的共生矿。白云矿区的稀土元素赋存于氟碳铈镧矿和独居石的混合型共生矿中，属于铈组为主的稀土矿物。中国稀土金属工业是一门新兴的工业，1949年以前只能作为锡矿的副产品而开采的独居石,可以从中提取钍制造气灯纱罩,提取稀土制造打火石。中华人民共和国成立以后，大力开展稀土金属的研究工作,50年代末,已能制取14种稀土金属（1972年制得钷）。60年代初，开始工业化生产。包头稀土金属公司、甘肃稀土金属公司、上海跃龙化工厂以及北京有色金属研究总院已成为国内主要的稀土产品生产和研究的基地。此外江西、广东等地也有生产稀土产品的厂矿。中国稀土精矿的生产能力（按氧化物计）约占世界的五分之一。1981年氯化稀土的生产能力比1978年增长3.36倍，产量增长1.69倍。产品有稀土精矿、混合稀土氧化物、混合稀土氯化物、单一稀土氧化物、混合稀土金属、单一稀土金属等。中国正在大力开展稀土元素的应用研究工作。
