南天星座之一。位于波江座的南面和东面，水蛇座、网罟座与雕具座之间，波江座的亮星水委一正好就在时钟座的西侧面。这个星座基本上是从波江座和雕具座分出来的一个星座。整个星座只有1颗4等星，其他的星都很暗谈，所以要把这些暗星想像成一只时钟是很困难的。这个星座是法国天文学家拉卡伊划定的。
据说拉卡伊认为从希腊到科尔喀斯去取金羊毛的巨大的远征船“阿尔戈”号在长途航行中，需要有只时钟，所以就设置了这个星座。但是，时钟座的位置与阿尔戈升天后化成的四个星座（船帆座、船尾座、船底座和罗盘座）没有一个能联系上，这是由于当时驾驶阿尔戈大船的勇士们都是利用天象来确定时间的，致使这个时钟座闲置在远离阿尔戈的南天中。
