美国的麦克唐盖尔博士曾在一家医院里做了一项特殊的实验：把一名即将咽气的肺病患者移放到一架很大但非常灵敏的光束天平上，大约过了三小时四十分，病人的面部表情骤然消失，一刹那间，光束发生了偏移，有21.26克的重量失去了。这一发现令他兴奋不已，在以后的两年半里，他又对五名临危病人进行了验证，这些病人在死去的一瞬间，失去10.6克至42.5克的重量。这似乎说明，除了灵魂离开了人身之外，没有其他的解释。为证实这点，麦克唐盖尔对15只狗做了同样的实验，结果狗在死时却没有失去任何重量，因为狗没有人一样的思想。
灵魂自古以来都被认为是非物质的，如果麦克唐盖尔称出的的确是灵魂的重量，人们就不禁要问：灵魂既然是物质的，它又是以什么形态存在的呢?难道物质除了固态，液态和气态三种以外还有第四存在形式？
