大小兰沟自然保护区是1999年2月经四川省人民政府批准成立的暖温带森林生态型自然保护区，总面积36000多公顷，核心面积6900多公顷。林内树木以享誉中外的“巴山水青杠”为主。1987年英国、美国、日本和北京林业大学的植物专家教授前来实地考察，考察后把“巴山水青杠”标本带回英国皇家学会，鉴定后认为是“冰川时期遗留下的植物活化石”。它属落叶乔木林，质地细致优良，是机械、军事、工业用材的优质木料。它还是一种珍贵的风景观赏树。每当深秋时节，树叶变红，层林尽染，给人“地毯铺到云天外”的感觉。巴山水青杠在全世界有11个品种，在中国有7个品种，而我们大小兰沟就有4个品种。大小兰沟是世界上面积最大、种类最多、保存最完整、分布最集中的巴山水青杠保护区；同时，它还是重要的科考和教研基地，曾先后有德国、英国、加拿大、日本等十多个国家的专家学者来此考察和研究，他们对自然保护区的科研、生态和自然景观都给予了高度评价。
