      珠江支流西江的主源。发源于云南省东北境曲靖市马雄山,流经曲靖地区南部,至红河州开远县折向东北,由罗平县入黔、桂境内,总长 856公里,云南省境内长677 公里。较大支流有巴江、曲江、泸江、甸溪河、块泽河、黄泥河、清水江等。北盘江源于宣威县马雄山北坡,向东流入贵州境内。两江在黔、桂交界处的蔗香汇合后,称红水河。南盘江水系沿途流经石灰岩分布区,主支流的不少河段潜入地下,地表径流减少,地下水量较丰富。丘北县六郎洞建有水电站,是中国第1座利用地下暗河发电的水电站。因流经干湿季分明的季风气候区域,河水径流量洪枯变化大,汛期径流量占年径流量的79.2%。航运价值不大,仅能季节性通航,干流通航338公里,支流127公里。云南省境内多年平均来水量164.2亿立方米,折合多年平均流量的521立方米/秒。水能蕴藏量424.65万千瓦。支流黄泥河全长153公里,落差969米,水能蕴藏量约74万千瓦,已建成装机容量60万千瓦的鲁布革水电站。南盘江上游河谷开阔,耕地连片,又有江水灌溉之惠,是滇东粮食主产地。
