反射层材料refleetor materials在反应堆活性区周围设置的、用于散射从活性区泄漏出的中子，使其改变方向重新回到活性区的物质层称反射层。设置反射层后，可更有效地利用中子，减小堆芯的临界体积，并可使堆芯功率的分布平坦化。热中子堆最常用的反射层材料有轻水、重水、核石.墨、被、氧化被和氧化错。反射层材料与慢化剂材料的特性基本相同，其散射截面大，吸收截面小，因此，好的慢化剂材料也是好的反射层材料。反射层可以是慢化剂简单地延伸到燃料装载区之外，也可以是满足上述性能要求的不同材料的区域。反射层选用与慢化剂不同的材料通常是为了更便宜些。 在快中子堆中，大部分裂变由高能中子引起，反射层材料由高质量数的致密物质如钢或贫铀组成，以使被反向散射进堆芯的中子受到最小的慢化。 灭内‘嘉混)
