热水温泉距经棚镇北30公里,开发利用已有一千年的历史上。热水主要分布在嘎拉达斯汰河北岸山前洪积扇裙上,分布范围0.3平方公里,动储量3017吨/日,热水稳定自流量2592吨/日。热水涌水量和承压性较大,补给来源充沛,主要是由大气降水、孔隙水、裂隙水沿断裂破碎带渗透、循环,在地壳深处受热后,又在导水花岗岩破碎带中汇集,沿裂隙上升涌至地表形成温泉,水温在摄氏83度左右。    温泉水中含化学元素氟、镭、特殊气体氡、硫化氢,稀有元素镓、钼、钨、锂、锶等47种微量元素。热水温泉对治疗皮肤病、风湿、高血压和心脑血管疾病有独特疗效。因水中含镭元素,形成低放射水质,对治疗神经系统的疾病有特殊效果。历来有“自然之经方,天地之良医”的美誉。康熙皇帝曾说“此为圣水,宝似金汤”。    相传在一千多年前,有一个叫嘎尔灯拉喜的僧人,为了选建寺庙的地址,走得马病人乏。过一道小溪,人马皆陷泥水中,只见马大口饮水,僧人亦捧水欲饮,手入水发现溪水炽热烫手,饮水后,顿觉神清气爽,疲倦尽去。马亦恢复元气,强壮如初。于是嘎尔灯拉喜喇嘛依山傍泉建起了阿尔善寺(可译为温泉寺或甘露寺),挖井成池,砌石设浴,四方牧民慕名而来,沐浴祛疾,遂视为“神水”、“圣水”,取名“嘎拉达斯汰”(意为“火热的泉”或“火水泉”)。后来,寺更名为“荟祥寺”。据说,清圣祖康熙皇帝为荟祥寺题写匾额。    天赞三年(924年),辽太祖耶律阿保机到赛罕坝(唐称为松漠,清称为兴安大岭,也称为带林)拜日,路过此处曾逗留洗浴。天显十二年(937年),辽太宗耶律德光曾专程来温泉洗浴。元代世居应昌的鲁王封此泉为“神泉”、“圣水”。康熙二十九年(1690年),康熙皇帝亲征噶尔丹,取得乌兰布统之战的胜利后,曾到热水沐浴,至今还留有“康熙浴井”遗址。1930年,活佛九世班禅曲吉尼玛来经棚庆宁寺讲经时,曾到热水温泉洗浴。    目前,热水已有温泉疗养院10家。这个依山傍水、景色宜人的温泉小镇,是内蒙古自治区唯一的一家功能齐全,服务优质的集疗养、旅游、度假、娱乐于一体的草原旅游度假村。同时热水温泉列入全国十一个甲级温泉的第二位。
