萝北苇场野生水禽栖息地处梧桐河与都鲁河下游之间未开垦的荒原低洼地，三江平原的大片湿地；萝北苇场、老等山、老等泡地带，也是两河及松花江洪水期防止倒灌的不适开发的地段，三江平原的大片湿地，土质肥沃，水域广阔，总面积13平方公里。沼泽、 泊、草原遍布，草场、芦苇、菖蒲等资源丰茂，原生植被保持尚好。属大陆性季风气候， 极适于季候鸟类的生息繁衍。千百年来，成为丹顶鹤、红面鹤、白鹤、玄鹤、蓑衣鹤、白鹤、黑鹳、赤鹭、苍鹭、白鹭、琵琶鹭、白天鹅、黑天鹅、鸳鸯、鸿雁、豆雁、赤麻鸭、绿颈鸭、江鸥等数十种游禽、涉禽鸟类及黄腚额、蓝腚额、阿灵等鸣禽，鹰串、白尾雕鹰等猛禽鸟类栖息、繁殖之地；老等山海拔76.1米，成为候鸟迁徒的天然坐标。老等泡水域3.6万平方米，是这一带最大的泡沼，也是水禽鸟类分布最多的水域。
由于它的地理条件决定了大量季候鸟类春来秋去，来此生息繁衍。由于近年三江平原的开发，排灌泻洪，开荒垦植，使周围环境发生，了巨大变化，迫使一些鸟类再迁徒北上。据考察：一些鸟类由于不适应北方的环境条件，又成群飞归这里，再度寻求在此生息。
