生物信息的1种,靠核酸以外的化学物质携带和传递。例如在真核细胞中被合成的蛋白质通过细胞膜运送是一个典型的化学信息过程。
蛋白质的跨膜运送有两种类型。一种是通过内质网膜──在这个过程中信号肽、信号识别蛋白、停靠蛋白等物质起重要作用；另一种是通过线粒体膜、叶绿体膜或核膜──在这个过程中导肽起主要作用。
又如昆虫分泌到体外的化学物质(称昆虫信息素)也是化学信息的一种，它能引起同种或异种昆虫的生理或行为反应。因此昆虫信息素也叫社会激素。信息素不仅昆虫具有，哺乳动物和鱼虾类也产生信息物质，信息素有多种生物活性，例如交配、产卵、迁移、集结、分散、自卫、示踪以及生长、发育等。
