定颇管理对一切可量化的管理对象实行量化、限额(或定量)管理的总称。它是用科学额度作为实现预期目标的一种管理方式，是管理科学由定性管理到定量管理、由经验管理阶段发展到科学管理阶段的重要标志。定额管理是科学管理理论形成的基础，泰罗时代的工作定额原理，为管理领域形成全方位、多层次、各有特色的定额管理概念和实践提供了理论依据。现行的各种定额管理制度和各种量化标准，均属定额管理理论的延伸与体现。庞杂而系统的定额管理体制，实际上已成为现行管理运作的依据或参照、比较的标准。诸如总体通用型定额有:现行定额、计划定额、设计定额、不变定额、总量定额、单量定额等。局部专用型定额有:工时定额、人员编制限额、超量计奖额、进出口配额、外汇额度等等。这都是定额管理体系应用于不同管理层次的实例。定额管理为现代管理数据化、程序化、电脑化提供了理论与实践的前提条件。
