将钢制品冷至 0℃以下温度的处理方法。广义而言,这也是一种金属热处理。深冷处理的主要目的是促使淬火后的钢中残留奥氏体转变为马氏体,使残留奥氏体量减到最低限度。最常采用深冷处理的是高碳高铬工具钢和高速工具钢。这些钢淬火后含大量残留奥氏体。如回火前在-72℃深冷处理,再施以二次回火,可大大提高工件的尺寸稳定性。其他采用深冷处理的材料还有铬轴承钢、量具用钢、表面渗碳钢、马氏体不锈钢、马氏体时效钢等。
