制备硅油、硅橡胶、硅树脂以及硅烷偶联剂的原料是各种有机硅单体，由几种基本单体可生产出成千种有机硅产品。有机硅单体主要有：甲基氯硅烷（简称甲基单体）、苯基氯硅烷（简称苯基单体）、甲基乙烯基氯硅烷、乙基三 氯硅烷、丙基三氯硅烷、乙烯基三氯硅烷、γ-氯丙基三氯硅烷和氟硅单体等。其中甲基氯硅烷最重要，其用量占整个单体总量的90%以上，其次是苯基氯硅烷。
任何高分子材料的发展，关键在于单体技术的发展。有机硅工业的特点是集中的单体生产和分散的产品加工。因此，单体生产在有机硅工业中占重要的地位，单体的生产水平直接反映有机硅工业的发展水平。
