英国主要的地质调查研究机构。又称大不列颠地质调查所。英文缩写BGS。1835年建于伦敦,20世纪80年代初迁至诺丁汉郊区的凯沃思。隶属于英国科学教育部的自然环境研究委员会。1965年与应用地质博物馆（1937年建立）、海外地质调查所(1947年建立)合并，称英国地质科学院。1984年恢复原名。首任所长为H.T.de la贝什，现任所长为P.J.库克。1991年初该所的机构重新调整。设有专题填图和陆上调查、石油地质、地球物理和海上调查、矿产和地球化学调查、地下水和地质工艺调查等调查研究部门，以及国际、市场、信息和行政管理等4个协调服务部门。现拥有800多名职工。在伦敦、爱丁堡等17个城市或地区设有分部。一个半世纪以来，不列颠地质调查所的基本任务是有计划地促进地质科学的发展，并为农业、矿业、建筑业等的开发进行一些重大的地质调查研究。目前重点对英国本土和周围大陆架进行地质调查和矿产资源评价工作；开展有关的基础地质理论研究工作；对发展中国家进行地质矿产调查评价方面的技术援助；建立和不断完善供各级政府、工业界和公众使用的全国地质科学数据库，促进英国的环境地质、矿产（特别是燃料矿产）地质工作的发展。主要出版物有：《报告》（月刊）、《通报》、《矿产评价报告》（不定期）和《年度报告》等。
