      北京市主要山脉。位于市区以北,昌平、延庆、怀柔县境,处太行山与燕山交接部。形成于中生代燕山运动,以褶皱、断层构造为主,并有岩浆侵入,花岗岩等岩浆岩和古老变质岩广布。西南-东北走向,重峦叠嶂,主要山峰如黑坨山、凤坨梁等,海拔1500米以上。山名疑源于古代部落桓都,亦作浑都,后演变为军都。又名南口山。温榆河发源其阳,白河横穿其阴。居庸关位其西翼,古北口控其东陲,军事和交通地位重要。山南麓有明"十三陵"。长城蛇形于山脊沟壑,气势磅礴,蔚为壮观,尤以八达岭、慕田峪等地段保存完好,为世界驰名的游览胜地。明代山上森林仍称茂密,后遭破坏。现南口、十三陵、密云水库(见密云县)周围和延庆县刘斌堡至四海冶一带,天然次生林和人工林生长良好,为北京市重要植林地区。
