Trichloroacetyl chloride reacted with acrylonitrile under reflux in the presence of a catalyst and a solvent to give 3,3,5,6 tetrachloro dihydropyridin 2 one, which was aromatized to 3,5,6 trichloropyridin 2 ol sodium,and acidized to 3,5,6 trichloropyridin 2 ol.

3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol is an important intermediate of chlorpyrifos.

And the pesticide intermediate 3,5,6-trichloropyridin-2-ol was produced through hydrolysis of 2,3,5,6-tetrachloropyridine.

Chlorpyrifos was synthesized by reacting of 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol sodium(1 mol) with O,O-diethyl phosphorochloridothioate(1 mol) via aqueous phase(pH=11-13) reaction and benzyltrimethyl ammonium chloride as catalyst at 60 °C for 3 hrs,and the yield and purity of chlorpyrifos were over 94% and 97%,respectively.
