木本,常有油细胞。单叶全缘。虫媒花,常集成不明显的聚伞花序或总状花序,花3基数;花被离生,同形;雄蕊5至多数,偶3,轮状或螺旋状排列,花药与花丝常能明显区分;雌蕊1至多数心皮,合生,胚珠1一2个,仅1个成熟。内胚乳有或无。

本目包括樟科、蜡梅科(Calycanthaceae)、莲叶桐科(Hernandiaceae)等8科。
