1956年建院于北京，是中国以有色金属采矿、选矿、冶金为主的综合性研究单位，兼搞黑色、稀有和贵金属的研究，以应用技术为主，理论研究为辅。研究内容包括各种采矿工艺、采矿设备、矿用炸药、系统工程，各种矿石的选矿工艺、选矿设备、选矿药剂，自动化、微型计算机应用，火法和湿法冶金，节能，永磁材料和复合粉末等新材料，环境保护，物质组成研究和化学分析方法等，附设有实验厂。拥有较先进的装备和较丰富的经验，专业配套，具有采、选、冶综合研究的优势，尤其擅长选矿工艺和选冶联合流程的研究。每年承担大量的国家重点课题和地方委托的课题，并培养研究生，出版多种刊物，提供情报信息,接待国外同行专家学者,承接国外科研任务和合作业务。建院以来共完成了上千个课题，其中65％以上已用于生产建设，有一百多项成果获国家和上级部门的奖励，为国家作出了重要贡献。
