| 太行山脉 位于中国山西高原与河北平原间 。东北-西南走向，局部地段近于南北走向。北起拒马河谷地，南至山西省、河南省边境的沁河平原。长700千米，褶皱断块山 ，山脊海拔1500～2000米。中段出露片麻岩，南 、北段主要为石灰岩。山地东侧为明显的断层，许多地段形成近1000米的断层岩壁，气势雄伟。主峰小五台山，海拔2882米。山脊西侧转为缓坦的高原。山西高原的河流经太行山流入华北平原。山地被拒马河、滹沱河、漳河、沁河等切割，多横谷，当地称陉。轵关陉、太行陉、白陉、滏口陉、井陉、飞狐陉、蒲阴陉和军都陉等被称为太行八陉，自古为河北平原进入山西高原的东西交通通道。太行山还是重要的地理分界，山以西为黄土高原，以东为黄淮平原。山地对夏季风有明显的阻滞作用，迎风坡降水较多，并形成暴雨区。背风坡则气候干燥。山地东侧还因断层活动而形成强烈的地震活动带。在太行山东翼断陷盆地中分布有井陉、临城、峰峰、六河沟等煤矿。
