又称石炭—二叠纪大冰期。晚古生代发生大规模冰川作用的时期。在当时属于冈瓦纳古陆的南半球各大洲及现今处于北半球的印度半岛,广泛发现该期冰川作用遗迹。从冰碛岩及冰川侵蚀、沉积的其它各种遗迹的分布看,冰川作用主要发生在非洲中部和南部、南美洲南部、澳大利亚、南极洲和印度。非洲和澳大利亚是冈瓦纳古陆上冰川作用最强盛的地区,地面广为冰川覆盖。大冰盖可能从中非呈放射状流向一些盆地,并向外延伸至当时与非洲相连的马达加斯加和南美洲,许多地方发现的冰碛岩厚达1000米左右。澳大利亚在二叠纪初期可能有一半的面积被冰盖占据。石炭—二叠纪冰川作用,是大陆漂移说论述冈瓦纳古陆的主要证据之一。除印度以外的现今北半球各大洲,晚古生代时期没有发生冰川作用,其原因可能是所处古纬度较低及古北极地区为开阔的海域所致。
