伊河发源于熊耳山南麓的栾川县，流经嵩县、伊川，穿伊阙而入洛阳，东北至偃师注入洛水。全长368公里，流域面积6100多平方公里。
魏黄初四年(223年)
据《晋书·五行志》载：“魏文帝黄初四年六月，大雨霖，伊、洛溢，至津阳城门(古洛阳城)，漂数干家。”又据《水经注·伊水》载：洛阳伊阙左壁上石刻铭文：“黄初四年六月二十四日，辛巳，大出水，举高四丈五尺(约合10.9米)，齐此已下。”经黄河水利委员会多次调查测量，推算这年伊河的洪水流量达20000立方米每秒。
