摩天岭隆起区地跨陕甘川三省,面积达万余km2,该区主要由中上元古界碧口群组成,局部为上太古界鱼洞子群及震旦系地层。

古元古代末(约1 600或1 800 Ma),随着摩天岭海闭合,狼林微陆块与冠帽微陆块通过碰撞聚合而形成一个整体,称为摩天岭运动(可以对比中国的吕梁运动)。

1936年6月，东北抗日联军第1军，为打通与关内红军的联系,开辟新的抗日游击区,由军政治部主任宋铁岩率第1师警卫连、少年营和第4团共400余人,从辽宁省凤城县山区出发，向热河西征。当越过摩天岭到达辽阳附近时，被日军发现。西征部队为摆脱敌人,兵分3路进行活动。7月15日,师司令部及警卫连共80余人，由师参谋长李敏焕率领回师摩天岭，将部队埋伏在山口两侧。中午，日军驻连山关守备队第2中队40多人,出动"追剿"，进入伏击圈内准备吃饭。伏击部队突然开火，首先击毙登高瞭望的中队长今田，紧接着就冲向日军，将其全部歼灭。下午,伏击部队又与日军后续部队激战数小时,歼数十人，其余日军黄昏时撤走。这次战斗，共歼日军80余人,缴获轻机枪5挺，步枪数十支及大量子弹。战斗中李敏焕牺牲。
