This paper expounds the mathematical and rational thinking in the format design and the objective regulation of the flowing of the line-of-sight in reading,introduces the theoretical foundations of the design of the parts,chapters and sections,and points out that the practical function of the book must be put on the important position in the format design.

By describing the functions of practical value and aesthetic value embodied in the ceramic design,this paper reveals the dialectical relations between practical function and aesthetic taste and tries to identify the development direction of the application of ceramic design.

From viewpoint of demands of human beings the utility functions and aesthetic functions of propitious patterns endowed in creation process according to the various demands are analyzed.
