森林分类按照一定的标准，把森林分为不同的几类。按林相的不同把森林分为单纯林和混交林。按森林所有制不同，把森林分为国有林、集体林和个体林(私有林)。在林学上按森林成因的不同，把森林分为天然林、人工林。《中华人民共和国森林法》第四条根据经营森林的目的不同，把森林分为以下五类:①防护林。以防护为主要目的的森林、林木、灌木丛。包括以涵养水源为主要目的.分布在河川分水岭和集水区的水源涵养林;以减少和分散地表径流.减轻或避免土壤浸蚀，防止水土流失为目的的水土保持林;在风沙危害地区为防治流沙和改造沙地，降低风速，固定流沙，改造土壤，从而扩大农牧业生产用地而营造的防风固沙林;以减轻风沙干旱等自然灾害，保护农田和牧场为目的而营造的农田、牧场防护林;护岸林和护路林。②用材林。以生产木材为主要目的的森林和林木，包括以生产竹材为目的的竹林。用材林按经营目的的不同，可分为一般用材林、造船用材林、矿柱林、造纸林、工艺林.以及特种用材林。③经济林。以生产果品、食用油料、饮料、调料、工业原料和药材等为主要目的的林木④薪炭林。以生产燃料为主要目的的林木薪炭林有乔木林和灌木林.一般采用萌芽力强，宜于种植.生长快，木材火力强、耐燃烧的树种，如闽南的相思树、福州地区的马尾松。⑤特种用途林。以国防、环境保护、科学实验等为主要目的的森林和林木。包括国防林、实验林、母树林、环境保护林、风景林、名胜古迹和革命纪念地的林木、自然保护区的林木。
