不过有人担心，这样一架“太空电梯”伸向太空，并运载这么重的货物，会不会影响地球的正常运转？答案是无需担心。
根据科学家的测算，如果“太空电梯”将15吨的货物送上太空，这部分“伸出”地球的质量将使地球自转一次的时间（即一天）增加1毫微微秒，1毫微微秒只有1秒的一千亿亿分之一。“太空电梯”的倡导者之一布拉德·爱德华兹博士认为，这点影响还比不上两极冰盖融化对地球造成的影响，因此可以忽略不计。
