病原体在机体内生长繁殖，可引起某些病理损害，但机体却无发病的临床表现，这是机体与病原体处于相持状态的一种表现。在机体内生长繁殖的病原体可以不同途径排出体外，成为重要传染源。根据机体情况可分为健康携带者与恢复期携带者两种，前者并非完全健康，包括部分潜在性感染与隐性感染初期病原体未被消灭阶段，或显性感染之前的潜伏期病原体携带。恢复期携带又有暂时与慢性之分，后者可表现为持续感染状态。
