The mode Ⅰ crack problem for Functionally Gradient Ceramic Materials is investigated in this paper,and the dimensionless stress intensity factors K I for functionally gradient ceramic materials with different compositional distributions under three-point bending are calculated by using the extrapolation technique.

The results indicate that the thermal shock resistance of ceramic material can be improved by controlling the compositional distribution appropriately.

Based on the analyses of stress distribution in ceramic inserts and their failure mechanisms, a model for designing compositional distribution of ceramic tool materials with gradient is proposed for the first time in this paper.
