   在四面有墙的场地上用网拍对墙击球的一种球类运动 。起源于18世纪的英格兰,当时许多人利用有墙的建筑物打壁球,尤其是在监狱中更为盛行。1888年英国举行了首届业余单打锦标赛。英式壁球比赛分单打、双打两种,男女均可参加。15分为一局,如打到13平,接球一方有权加赛5分或3分,先打满分者为胜。单打比赛采用5局3胜制,双打比赛采用 7局4胜制。比赛开始, 发球队员在发球区击球至前墙发球线以上,对方接发球。双方轮流击球直至击球失误。球落地两次为连击。发球失误,允许第二次发球。只有发球权一方胜一球才能得一分。标准场地为四面墙围成的长方形场区。墙高9.14米,球场面积 18.3米×9.14米。前墙距地面 2.95米高处有一条发球线平行地面 。场地设发球区左半区和右半区。后墙有门供运动员出入。壁球拍柄长 76厘米,拍框为圆形,直径约17.8~20.3厘米。球为硬心球,直径 2.54 厘米,重约28.35 克。 美式壁球是在墙手球的场地上用短柄网拍击球的运动。诞生于1940年。有些规则不同于英式壁球。如发球人只有一次发球机会;接球人回球前必须让球落地一次后再击球至前墙。球碰前墙后再弹至侧墙为好球,但直接将球击向侧墙则判回球失误。球为黑色橡胶球。直径 5.72厘米。重约35.4克。
