    中国新疆最大的淡水湖泊。位于新疆维吾尔自治区中部焉耆盆地的一个山间陷落湖。又称巴喀赤湖,北魏《水经注》称为敦薨浦。湖面海拔1048米,南北宽约25千米,东西长约55千米。湖水面积1019平方千米,最大水深15.7米,蓄水量99亿立方米。汇入湖泊的河流主要来自西北的开都河、马拉斯台河等,多年平均入湖径流量为26.8亿立方米,经西南部的孔雀河排出,平均每年出流量为12.5亿立方米,穿铁门关峡谷,进入库尔勒地区,最后汇入罗布泊。在铁门关建有新疆最大的水电站。20世纪60年代后,由于库尔勒地区工农业用水量不断增加,每年要求加大出湖水量,已引起湖水位下降,湖面缩小,湖水矿化度逐年升高,今已演变成一个微咸水湖泊。原产的塔里木裂腹鱼(俗称尖头鱼)、扁吻鱼(俗称大头鱼)和长头鱼等资源已衰减。造纸用的芦苇资源相当丰富。总面积40万公顷。
