肠杆菌科的 1属。本属成员是两端钝圆的革兰氏染色阴性短杆菌，为人和动物肠道中较多见的正常菌群之一，能合成维生素B、K等。一般不致病，偶而引起肠外感染（如尿路感染）。某些血清型能导致腹泻等肠道症状。是国际上广泛使用的卫生监督指示菌，可作为饮水、食品等卫生检定的指标。本属只有大肠杆菌1种。
