虫茶的营养价值高于普通茶叶。它含有十八九种人体必需的氨基酸，相当量的粗蛋白、粗脂肪、糖类、单宁、维生素等营养成分和微量元素。清代光绪年间的《城步乡土志》记载：茶有八峒茶......亦有茶虽粗恶，置之旧笼一二或数，茶悉化为虫，余名曰虫茶。茶收贮经久，下能消痰顺气。因此它是一种很好的医药保健速溶饮料。经常饮用虫茶，能止渴提神、降血压、促消化、利尿、顺气化痰、解毒消肿，对鼻出血、牙龈出血、痔出血、腹泻等病均有一定疗效。据说从清代乾隆年间起，虫茶就被视为珍品，每年定期向朝廷进贡。如今，虫茶已闻名海内外。
相传，清朝乾隆年间，城步亩民起义，朝廷出兵镇压，百姓们被赶进深山老林，以野莱、茶叶充饥。谁知，屋漏偏遇连雨天，茶叶遭到虫害，被吃得净光，只剩下了漫山遍野的虫屎渣滓。人们偶然发现，虫屎落入水中，泡出缕缕血丝般的茶叶，试着一喝，味道香郁甘美。后来人们索性就有意以化香树叶诱蛾产卵，专取幼虫粪便熬茶，这就是现在饮用的虫茶。这一偶而所为，使虫茶走出大森林，来到人间。
虫茶的制作方法不同一般茶叶。每年谷雨前后，当地老百姓就上山，把野生的化香树、三叶海棠、大白解的树叶采集下来，混杂一些苦茶的叶子，放在竹篓或木桶里面，洒上淘米水发酵，即可引来许多极小的黑虫子主要是化香夜蛾和米黑虫来取食、产卵。当这些虫子吃完了植物叶片，便排出许多细小如珠的粪粒，当地人取名叫虫珠。人们随后用筛子把杂渣去掉，利用阳光晒干，即为虫茶。更为考究的是，在阳光下曝晒后，还要在180摄氏度的铁锅里炒上20分钟，再加上93克蜂蜜、93克茶叶，虫茶才得以制成。
生产虫茶的昆虫很多，而以化香夜蛾分布最广。此虫属鳞翅目，夜峨科，分布在海拔500一1000米的山地，喜食腐熟的化香树叶。
