知识经济，亦称智能经济，是指建立在知识和信息的生产、分配和使用基础上的经济。它是和农业经济、工业经济相对应的一个概念。
知识经济理论形成于20世纪80年代初期。1983年，美国加州大学教授保罗·罗默提出了“新经济增长理论”，认为知识是一个重要的生产要素，它可以提高投资的收益。“新经济增长理论”的提出，标志着知识经济在理论上的初步形成。但是，知识经济作为一种经济产业形态的确立是近年来的事，其主要标志是美国微软公司总裁比尔·盖茨为代表的软件知识产业的兴起。盖茨的主要产品是软盘及软盘中包含的知识，正是这些知识的广泛应用打开了计算机应用的大门，微软公司的产值已超过美国三大汽车公司产值的总和。近年来美国经济增长的主要源泉就是5000家软件公司，它们对世界经济的贡献不亚于名列前茅的500家世界大公司。所有这些表明，在现代社会生产中，知识已成为生产要素中一个最重要的组成部分，以此为标志的知识经济将成为21世纪的主导型经济形态。
知识经济的特点表现在：知识经济是促进人与自然协调、持续发展的经济，其指导思想是科学、合理、综合、高效地利用现有资源，同时开发尚未利用的资源来取代已经耗尽的稀缺自然资源；知识经济是以无形资产投入为主的经济，知识、智力、无形资产的投入起决定作用；知识经济是世界经济一体化条件下的经济，世界大市场是知识经济持续增长的主要因素之一；知识经济是以知识决策为导向的经济，科学决策的宏观调控作用在知识经济中有日渐增强的趋势。
目前，知识经济作为一种崭新的经济形态正在悄然兴起。在知识经济的模式中，知识、科技先导型企业成为经济活动中最具活动的经济组织形式，代表了未来经济发展的方向。
