    成分为 (Ce,La,Nd,Th)〔PO4〕的磷酸盐矿物。单斜晶系,晶体为板状或柱状。因经常呈单晶体而得名。棕红色 、黄色 ,有时褐黄色 ,油脂光泽,解理完全,莫氏硬度5~5.5,比重4.9~5.5。常具放射性。主要作为副矿物产在花岗岩、正长岩、片麻岩和花岗伟晶岩中,与花岗岩有关的热液矿床中也有产出。但主要矿床是滨海砂矿和冲积砂矿。独居石含Ce2O3 25%~30%,La2O320%~ 30%,是提取铈族稀土元素的重要矿物原料,由于成分中经常有钍代替铈,ThO2含量最多可达30%,在提取铈时,可综合提取钍。
