农业机械的起源可以追溯到原始社会使用简单农具的时代。在中国，新石器时代的仰韶文化时期（约公元前5000～前3000）出现了原始的耕地工具耒耜；公元前13世纪有了铜犁头；春秋战国（公元前8～前3世纪）时已拥有耕地、播种、收获、加工和灌溉等一系列铁、木制农具；公元前90年前后，赵过发明三行耧（三行条播机），其基本结构至今仍在使用；9世纪形成结构完备的畜力铧式犁，之后相继出现了农业生产中使用的各种机械和工具。在西方，原始的木犁起源于美索不达米亚和埃及，约公元前1000年开始使用铁犁铧。1831年，美国的C.H.麦考密克创制了马拉收割机。1836年出现了马拉的谷物联合收获机。1850～1855年间，先后制造并推广使用了谷物播种机、割草机和玉米播种机等。随后，各种现代农业机械相继问世。20世纪70年代以来，随着电子技术、计算机技术等各种先进科学技术的发展，农业机械逐步向作业过程的自动化方向迈进。 农业机械种类繁多，按用途可分为农用动力机械（各种农业机械和农业设施提供动力的机械）、农田建设机械土壤耕作机械、种植机械、施肥机械、农田排灌机械、植物保护机械、作物收获机械、农产品加工机械、畜牧业机械和农业运输机械等。农业机械还可按作业方式、作业地点和所用动力及其配套方式分类。 农业机械以土壤、作物、牲畜以及水、肥、农药等各种物料为工作对象，工作条件恶劣多变、使用分散、保管条件差、工作部件易磨损。因而要求农业机械坚固耐用，安全可靠，使用维修方便。在满足农业技术要求的前提下，尽可能提高产品和零部件的标准化、系列化和通用化程度。 |
