属燕山山脉支脉。位于赤峰市西部与河北省交界处，为断块山地。西北 东南走向。西北起自白岔山，东南接努鲁儿虎山。老哈河、滦河分水岭。海拔1000一1200米。主峰平顶山在河北省隆化县境内。最高峰是坐落在赤峰市郊区西北部的大光顶子山，海拔2067米，也是郊区与克什克腾旗、河北省围场县的界山。大光顶子山长约3公里，宽约2．5公里，东北和西南坡陡峭险峻，北坡较为平缓，山上植物茂盛，产有多种野生药材。
