haut couture是法语，是一个专用词汇，特指法国巴黎专为私人订制的手工精致服装。其款式以夜礼服为主。由高级女装设计师设计，选用优质面辅料和饰品，手工缝制且经过多次试穿。高级女装的价格昂贵，世界上仅极少数富有女性有能力购置（专门机构曾统计为约20o0人。相对于全球庞人的人口，这确乎是沧海一粟）。19世纪中叶，高级女装业由沃思（worth）在巴黎创立。要成为一名高级女装设计师必须由法国文化部确认，并每年在巴黎举办两次时装发布会，时间分别为1月和7月。高级女装常常代表时装的流行趋势。
世界上其他地方的时装业，也生产高级的女装，有时与巴黎高级女装十分相似，如纽约的high fashion，罗马的altamode。但是，如果他们爱慕haut couture这个称呼并借用来描述自己的产品，就难免僭越之讥。
