性质:无色略有粘性的液体。熔点<-40℃,沸点244.2℃,163℃(6.67kPa),129℃(1.33kPa),102℃(0.4kPa),94-96℃(66.7Pa),相对密度0.9422(20/20℃),折光率1.4530(22℃),闪点129℃。溶于醇和醚。在水中溶解度为0.6%(重)。水中该品中的溶解度10.8%,无气味,有吸湿性。

制备方法:先由丙烯合成丁醛,在碱或酸的催化下,丁醛自身缩合生成2-乙基-3-羟基已醛。这一化合物很不稳定,经加氢即得2-乙基-1,3-已二醇。

用途:用于有机合成,可制取聚酯树脂、聚酯增塑剂、聚氨酯树脂等。该品对蚊蝇是有效的驱虫剂,也可用于生产化妆品或作为油墨溶剂。
