| 索道 ropeway 由驱动机带动钢丝绳，牵引客厢或货厢在距离地面一定高度的空间运行的空中通道。索道对自然地形的适应性强 ，爬坡角度大，能缩短运输距离，因而被广泛应用于工矿企业和山区。按运送对象分为货运索道和客运索道。 货运索道主要有单线循环式索道和双线循环式索道两种。单线循环式索道循环运转的钢丝绳既作承载用，又作牵引用。在其两侧各按等距挂若干个货厢，一侧为重载，另一侧为空载。双线循环式索道循环运转的钢丝绳仅作牵引用。在其两侧各有一条承载索。 客运索道主要有往复式索道和循环式索道两类。往复式索道是在线路支架两侧的承载索上各挂有一个车厢，车厢由一条或两条牵引索牵引着沿线路往复运行，运送乘客。循环式索道主要为单线循环车厢（或吊椅）式索道。它是在线路支架两侧的钢丝绳上按等间距各挂若干个车厢或吊椅，钢丝绳由驱动机带动作循环运行，不间断地运送乘客。无论哪种索道，都配有一系列安全设施，以保障乘客的安全。
