卟吩与金属的络合物。卟吩（卟啉骨架）是由四个吡咯环在α位通过次甲基连接起来的大环,它的四个杂环氮原子在同一平面向大环内的金属提供配位电子，形式上Ⅰ环和Ⅲ环有两个氢被金属置换，Ⅱ环和Ⅳ环的氮参与配位，形成了四个氮和金属等距离的络合关系。这类金属有机化合物没有M─C键，而有M─N键。
天然存在的金属卟啉有血红素和叶绿素，前者是一种卟啉络合铁，后者是一种卟啉络合镁，结构式如下：
人工合成的金属卟啉在大杂环外的碳上没有取代基，它们都是带色的晶体，卟啉络合铁（Ⅲ）盐在乙醚中呈棕色，卟啉络合镁（Ⅱ）盐为红色针状晶体，卟啉络合铜（Ⅱ）盐为棕色针状晶体。
