化学组成为FeO(OH)、 晶体属正交(斜方)晶系并结晶成γ相的氢氧化物矿物。与针铁矿、四方纤铁矿(aka-ganeite)和六方纤铁矿(feroxyhyte)成同质多象。晶体呈板状或片状；通常以鳞片状、纤维状或块状集合体产出。红至红褐色；条痕橘红色。半金属光泽。具三组相互垂直的解理。摩斯硬度5,比重4.09。纤铁矿是褐铁矿的组成矿物之一,它在成因上与针铁矿密切相关,两者常共同产出,可一起用于炼铁,但纤铁矿较为少见。呈细分散状并含吸附水的纤铁矿称为水纤铁矿。
