| 鸵鸟 Struthio camelus；ostrich 鸵形目鸵鸟科鸵鸟属仅有的1种。又称非洲鸵鸟。产于非洲沙漠地带。是现存鸟类中最大的一种。雄鸟从头顶至足高约2.5米，从背至足高约1.4米，雌鸟稍小。两翅退化，胸骨的龙骨突不发达，不能飞。尾羽蓬松而下垂。足具2趾和肉垫，强而善走。栖息于荒漠有矮小的灌丛和多刺的树木地带。常和斑马、羚羊、长颈鹿等集群活动。以植物为食，有时也吃昆虫和小型爬虫 。繁殖期1只雄鸟要配3～5只雌鸟。在沙地上挖穴，相配的雌鸟均在此穴内产卵，每穴内卵数为15～60枚，因不同亚种而异；通常1只雌鸟能产6～8卵；卵乳白色，大小约150毫米×125毫米 ，是现代最大的鸟蛋。约35～42天孵出幼鸟。
鸵鸟善于奔跑，时速可达80千米，羽毛为名贵饰物。 |
