This paper analysed the reasons for the congestion of positive protected acid cooler, and the proper measures were carried out.

A copper smelter acid plant suffered from too high acid temperature,often over 110℃, in intermediate absorption tower to operate normally due to heat transfer area insufficient to match the increased smelter off-gas volume and SO2 concentration, which resulted in much more heat produced in SO2 oxidation and SO3 absorption and load of acid coolers for the intermediate absorption.

Improving cooling water quality,controlling water flow speed and cleaning using advanced techniques of high-pressure fluidics or cooler water side chemical flushing are the best way to solve scale blocking in acid cooler tube.
