【植物形态】
月桂(《本草拾遗》)，又名：老利儿。 常绿乔木，高可达9～12米，树皮黑褐色。叶互生，革质，长椭圆形或披针形，长约6～11厘米，宽2～4厘米，先端锐尖，基部楔形，全缘或稍波状，反卷，深绿色，破碎后有清香；叶脉羽状，两面隆起；叶柄长约1厘米，紫色。伞形花序腋生，雌雄异株；花小，直径3～4毫米，黄色，总花梗长约1厘米，梗基有总苞；雄花花被片4，倒卵形，先端钝圆；雄蕊12，每轮3数排列，花药内向瓣裂；雌花花被4，雌蕊1，子房1室，柱头短，稍成头状。浆果椭圆形，暗紫色。花期4月。 分布浙江、江苏、福建、台湾等地.常栽培于庭园。
【药材】
干燥果实呈卵圆形，几为黑色，长至15毫米，顶端略尖，有柱头的残基；表面平滑而带光泽，具粗皱纹。果皮薄而脆，内有种子1粒，其种皮紧贴于果皮的内壁，胚通常呈类棕黄色，内有子叶2枚。子叶气味芳香，味苦，果皮香气略逊，但味较苦。
【性味】
《纲目》："辛，温，无毒。"
【功用主治】
①《本草拾遗》："治小儿耳后月蚀疮，研碎敷之。" ②《国药的药理学》："煎汁，可为误食河豚鱼的解毒药。" ③《中国药植图鉴》："治疥癣。"
【用法与用量】
内服：煎汤，1～2钱。外用：研末掺。
